# Notion AI vs ChatGPT: which to use, and is Notion AI worth it?

> Use Notion AI when the answer lives in your Notion workspace, and ChatGPT for everything that starts from a blank page or the open web. Notion AI now comes with the Business plan rather than as an add-on, which changes the math on whether it's worth paying for.

## Key takeaways

- Use Notion AI when the answer lives in your Notion pages, meetings and databases; use ChatGPT for drafting from scratch, research on the open web, and work kept outside Notion.
- Since May 2025, Notion AI comes with the Business and Enterprise plans. Free and Plus get a limited trial, and Notion's pricing page doesn't offer a separate AI add-on.
- At time of writing (October 2026), Notion Business is $20 per member per month billed yearly, $10 more than Plus. ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month.
- Notion AI's clearest wins are AI Meeting Notes, which transcribe and summarize calls without a bot joining, and Enterprise Search across your workspace and connected apps.
- The skill that transfers between them is the same: give the AI the source material, then say exactly what format you want back.

## Notion AI vs ChatGPT: the short answer

**Use Notion AI when the answer lives in your Notion workspace, and ChatGPT for work that starts from a blank page, the open web, or files kept somewhere else.**

That's the whole split. Notion AI already sits inside your pages, databases and meeting notes, and searches only what you have access to, so it can answer "what did we decide about the launch date?" without you pasting anything. ChatGPT is the broader assistant: voice, image generation, deep research, and projects that hold files and instructions across chats. It can reach into Notion through a plugin, but it's working from the outside.

Whether Notion AI is worth paying for comes down mostly to one number, covered below: what Notion charges to move from its Plus plan to Business.

## What Notion AI includes in 2026, and what changed

Notion changed how it sells AI in May 2025. Its [release notes from 13 May 2025](https://www.notion.com/releases/2025-05-13) put Notion AI, including meeting notes, enterprise search and research mode, inside the Business and Enterprise plans. Notion's help center now says AI is available on Business and Enterprise, and that Free and Plus users get a limited number of complimentary AI responses to try it. The current pricing page doesn't offer a separate AI add-on.

Here's what [Notion's pricing page](https://www.notion.com/pricing) lists at time of writing (October 2026):

- **Free and Plus:** a trial of Notion AI, with limited trials of Notion Agent, meeting notes and research mode. Enterprise Search isn't included. Plus is $10 per member per month billed yearly.
- **Business:** $20 per member per month billed yearly, or $24 month to month. It includes Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, research mode and Enterprise Search (in beta), plus SAML SSO and private teamspaces.
- **Enterprise:** custom pricing, and Notion says its AI providers keep zero data retention for Enterprise workspaces.
- **Custom Agents:** a separate, usage-based extra. They're free to try, then $10 per 1,000 monthly Notion credits.

On privacy, Notion's pricing page says Notion AI won't use your data to train its models unless you opt in. [OpenAI's pricing page](https://chatgpt.com/pricing) marks content on ChatGPT's Free and Plus plans as used for training, with an opt-out available.

## Notion AI vs ChatGPT, task by task

| Task | Notion AI | ChatGPT | Better pick |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Notes you already keep | Reads the page you're on, summarizes it, pulls out action items | Needs the notes pasted, uploaded or connected | Notion AI |
| Writing from a blank page | Drafts and edits inside the doc | Drafts, rewrites and brainstorms in chat, by voice or text | ChatGPT |
| Meeting notes | AI Meeting Notes transcribes and summarizes, no bot (Business) | Works from a transcript or notes you provide | Notion AI |
| Searching your own workspace | Enterprise Search across Notion and connected apps (Business) | Plugins reach Notion, Google Drive or Slack from outside | Notion AI |
| Databases | Autofill writes properties across every row | Analyzes spreadsheets you upload | Notion AI |
| Research on the open web | Research mode drafts reports from workspace, tools and web | Deep research, limited on Free, fuller on Plus | ChatGPT, unless the report depends on your workspace |
| Cost for one person | Full AI needs Business: $20 a month billed yearly | Free, Go at $8 or Plus at $20 a month | ChatGPT |

## Meeting notes and searching your own workspace

This is where Notion AI earns its price. [AI Meeting Notes](https://www.notion.com/help/ai-meeting-notes) records from the Notion desktop app, capturing both your microphone and your computer's audio, so remote participants on Zoom, Google Meet or Teams are transcribed without a bot joining the call. When you stop, it writes a summary with key points and action items, and its citations jump to the transcript line each point came from.

In the browser or on your phone it records only your microphone, which suits in-person meetings better. There's a 10-hour daily limit per person, and Notion reminds you to get everyone's consent before you transcribe.

**Enterprise Search** answers questions from your Notion pages and connected tools such as Slack, Microsoft Teams and GitHub, with citations back to the sources. Ask what you promised a client in the last review and it can point you to the page that says so.

ChatGPT can do a version of both, from the outside. Give it a transcript or your rough notes and it will turn them into a clean summary with owners and deadlines; our page on [AI for meetings](/ai-for-meetings) has the prompts.

Its plugins can read Google Drive, Slack and Notion itself. What it doesn't do is live in your workspace, so each question starts with you pointing it at the right files. For long reports and PDFs, see [how to summarize a document with AI](/blog/how-to-use-ai-to-summarize-a-document).

## Writing and docs: where ChatGPT pulls ahead

For writing that starts from nothing, ChatGPT is the better tool. You can talk an idea through by voice, keep a project's files and instructions together across chats with Projects (on every plan, Free included), generate images, and run deep research when a draft needs sources. On Pro, ChatGPT also has pages in its Space workspace: documents you and ChatGPT edit together, with child pages and comments for collaborators.

Notion AI's writing strengths are in place rather than from scratch. Highlight text and ask it to improve or translate it, ask for a first draft of a page, or let autofill write a summary into every row of a database. It's also where the finished document lives, which saves a copy-paste step.

A split that works for plenty of people: think and draft in ChatGPT, then move the result into Notion and let Notion AI tidy, summarize and file it. If ChatGPT is your drafting tool, it's worth [learning it properly](/learn-chatgpt) rather than leaning on the defaults.

## Is Notion AI worth it?

It depends on where you start. Prices below are at time of writing (October 2026).

- **Your team already runs on Notion Plus.** Business costs $10 more per member per month on yearly billing, and that buys Notion AI plus SSO and private teamspaces. If you hold regular meetings and lose time hunting for decisions in old pages, it's usually worth it.
- **You work alone and don't live in Notion.** Skip it. ChatGPT covers more ground outside a workspace, and its free tier handles casual use. Our take on [whether ChatGPT Plus is worth it](/blog/is-chatgpt-plus-worth-it) covers the next step up.
- **You use Notion personally on the Free plan.** Use the trial to test meeting notes and questions about your own pages first. Business is priced per member, so it's more a team decision than a personal one.
- **You want both.** That's a common setup: Notion AI for anything inside the workspace, ChatGPT for everything else.

**Use Notion AI when** the question is about your own pages, meetings or databases. **Use ChatGPT when** the work starts blank, needs the open web, or lives in files outside Notion.

## The skill that works in both

Notion AI and ChatGPT fail the same way: vague request, generic output. Both get sharp when you hand them the source material and say exactly what you want back, such as "action items as a table with owner, task and due date" instead of "summarize this." That extract-to-format habit is the core of [using Notion AI well](/learn-notion-ai), and it carries straight over to ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot.

It's also a habit you can practice. Iro AI teaches it in five-minute lessons with instant feedback, through a ChatGPT course and a productivity path, and the Prompt Lab (Pro) scores the prompts you write on clarity, specificity, constraints and context. If you want a path on Notion itself, Custom Paths (Pro) builds one on any topic. Drills on spotting hallucinations cover the other half of the job: checking that a summary says what the meeting actually said.

## FAQ

**Is Notion AI worth it?**

It's worth it if your team already works in Notion and holds regular meetings, because AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search cut manual note-taking and searching. AI now comes with the Business plan, $20 per member per month billed yearly at time of writing (October 2026). If you work alone and outside Notion, ChatGPT is the better buy.

**Is Notion AI free?**

Not fully. Notion's Free and Plus plans include a limited trial of Notion AI, a limited number of complimentary AI responses. The full feature set, including AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search, comes with the Business and Enterprise plans. Custom Agents use separate Notion credits after a free trial.

**Can I still buy Notion AI as an add-on?**

Notion's current pricing page doesn't list one. Since May 2025, Notion AI has come with the Business and Enterprise plans, and Free and Plus users get a limited trial. If your workspace had the older add-on, check your billing settings to see what it still includes.

**Does Notion AI use ChatGPT?**

Notion doesn't tie Notion AI to a single model. Its help center says you can switch between the latest AI models, and workspace admins choose which AI providers members can use. Notion AI is a separate product from ChatGPT, with its own plans and billing.

**Can ChatGPT read my Notion pages?**

Yes, through ChatGPT's Notion plugin, which connects your account so ChatGPT can search and read pages you have access to. It works from outside your workspace, so you point it at the right content, while Notion AI already sits inside your pages with your permissions.

**Is Notion AI better than ChatGPT for meeting notes?**

For teams on Notion's Business plan, usually yes. AI Meeting Notes transcribes calls from the desktop app without a bot, then writes a summary with key points and action items that link back to the transcript. With ChatGPT you typically provide the transcript or notes yourself, then prompt for the summary format you want.
