# Gamma vs Canva vs ChatGPT for slides: which AI should make your deck?

> Gamma builds the most complete first draft, Canva is best at holding a brand, and ChatGPT fits when the deck grows out of your own notes and has to end up in PowerPoint or Google Slides. Here's how they compare on drafting, design control, export, collaboration and price.

## Key takeaways

- Gamma makes the most complete first draft: in Gamma 5 an agent asks about your goal and audience, shows you a plan, then writes and designs the whole deck.
- Canva is the pick when a deck must match your brand, thanks to its Brand Kit and full drag-and-drop editor. Its AI drafts an outline you can edit before it generates.
- ChatGPT Slides builds a deck from a conversation or files and exports to PowerPoint, PDF or Google Slides, but it needs a Pro, Business or Enterprise plan. Plus gets downloadable presentation files and the PowerPoint extension.
- For PowerPoint handoffs, Gamma's PPTX export embeds fonts and keeps tables editable, but there's no slide master and Google Slides swaps in its own fonts.
- The tool matters less than the outline. Write the one sentence, the audience, three points, the evidence and the ask before you generate anything.

## Gamma vs Canva vs ChatGPT: the short answer

**Use Gamma for the fastest complete first draft, Canva when the deck has to look like your brand, and ChatGPT when the hard part is the thinking and the file has to end up in PowerPoint or Google Slides.**

All three can now turn a prompt into a full deck, so "can it make slides?" no longer separates them. What does is how much the AI asks before it builds, how tightly you can hold a brand, how cleanly the file leaves the app, and which plan you need. One gate catches people out: ChatGPT's collaborative Slides editor is on Pro, Business and Enterprise plans, not Plus.

None of them will fix a talk with no argument, which is why the last section matters more than the comparison. For the wider tool landscape, see [the best AI apps](/blog/best-ai-apps).

## Which AI makes the best first draft of a deck?

**Gamma** does the most work per prompt. In Gamma 5, creating starts as a conversation: in the default Plan mode the agent asks about your goal and audience, shows a plan for the story and the look, and waits for your go-ahead before it writes, designs and adds images. Express skips the questions, and Research pulls in web sources first.

Gamma's subscription guide lists up to 10 slides per prompt on the Free plan and up to 100 on paid plans, and every AI action spends credits. [Its own help](https://help.gamma.app/en/articles/15002203-how-do-i-create-with-agent-in-gamma) says thirty seconds spent adjusting the plan can save rounds of revisions later, which is the right instinct. Our [Gamma guide](/learn-gamma) covers prompting it well.

**Canva** splits the job in two. Open Canva AI, choose Design and then Presentation, describe the topic, and you get an outline first. Edit each section's key ideas, add, delete or reorder sections, then generate. That pause is useful, because fixing structure in an outline costs far less than fixing it across twelve designed slides.

**ChatGPT** is strongest when the deck grows out of work you've already done in a chat. With ChatGPT Slides, on Pro, Business and Enterprise plans, you ask for a presentation from the conversation, an outline or source files, describe the audience, goal and length, and can attach a reference deck to guide layout and style.

On Plus, ChatGPT can still create a presentation file for you to download and refine, and its PowerPoint extension works inside PowerPoint itself. If ChatGPT is your main tool, [learning it properly](/learn-chatgpt) pays off here too.

## Which is best for on-brand design and editing control?

For brand consistency, **Canva** wins. Its Brand Kit holds your logos, color palettes and fonts, the editor gives you direct, drag-and-drop control of every element on the slide, and Canva AI 2.0 adds chat-based edits inside an open design. The limit is that AI features draw on a monthly usage allowance, larger on paid plans. Our [Canva AI guide](/learn-canva-ai) covers briefing it so the output stays on brand.

**Gamma 5** changed how editing works. Presentations now sit on a fixed 16:9 canvas with grid layouts, plus freeform placement when you need precision. Themes live on each file, so changing one deck's look doesn't touch the others.

Save a theme to your workspace to share it, or build one by importing an existing PowerPoint or Google Slides file, which pulls in its colors, fonts and logo. If the words are right but the look isn't, ask the agent to restyle rather than regenerate, and your content stays put.

**ChatGPT Slides** lets you edit text, images, shapes, tables and charts directly, or select one element and choose Request edits. A prompt bar handles deck-wide changes, such as shortening the story for an executive audience. For brand, your lever is the example deck or template you share at the start.

## Exporting to PowerPoint or Google Slides, and working as a team

If the deck has to live in PowerPoint, test the export before you commit to a tool.

- **Gamma** exports PDF, PNG and PowerPoint, and reaches Google Slides by uploading the PowerPoint file. Its [PPTX export](https://help.gamma.app/en/articles/8022861-what-s-the-easiest-way-to-export-my-gamma) embeds your theme fonts, keeps tables editable and carries speaker notes. There's no slide master, though, and Google Slides ignores embedded fonts and substitutes its own. On the Free plan, exports carry a "Made with Gamma" badge.
- **Canva** downloads decks as PowerPoint files, and its own route into Google Slides runs through that file. Canva warns that some features may not display in Google Slides, so budget a cleanup pass.
- **ChatGPT Slides** [exports to PowerPoint, PDF or Google Slides](https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/space/getting-started) on the web, and the desktop app can open a deck in PowerPoint or Keynote. You can also present straight from ChatGPT with speaker notes. OpenAI's own advice is to check the exported file's content and formatting before sharing it.

On collaboration, all three let a team work on one deck. Canva has real-time co-editing with comments, and view, comment or edit sharing. Gamma links can be set to view, comment or edit. ChatGPT Slides supports simultaneous editing and shared comments, where you can mention ChatGPT to request a change, but sharing is view or edit only, with no comment-only role.

## What each costs for making slides

- **ChatGPT:** Plus is $20 a month and covers downloadable presentation files and the PowerPoint extension. The Slides editor needs Pro, from $100 a month, or a Business or Enterprise plan.
- **Gamma:** the Free plan's credits don't refresh and a single prompt generates up to 10 slides. Paid plans (Plus, Pro and Ultra) add monthly credits and drop the badge, and Business is $40 per member per month, billed annually.
- **Canva:** AI features run on a monthly allowance that's bigger on paid plans. Check Canva's pricing page for current plan costs before you upgrade for AI alone.

Prices are at time of writing (October 2026), from each company's own pages, and they change often. If you already pay for one of these, start there before adding another subscription.

## The skill that matters more than the tool: outline first

All three handle layout well, and none of them knows what your talk is for. A deck generated from a topic comes back as tidy bullet points about the topic. A deck generated from an argument comes back as a talk.

So write the outline before you open any of them. Five lines is enough:

- **The one sentence** you want the audience to remember.
- **Who's in the room** and what they already believe.
- **Three points** that move them from there to your sentence, in order.
- **One piece of evidence per point:** a number, a quote, a before-and-after.
- **The ask:** the decision or action you want at the end.

Paste that into Gamma's plan step, Canva's outline or a ChatGPT prompt, and all three return something worth editing. Skip it and you'll spend your credits regenerating. Our page on [AI for presentations](/ai-for-presentations) goes deeper on structuring a talk, and [how to write a prompt](/blog/how-to-write-a-prompt) covers the briefing side.

If you want to get faster at this, Iro AI has an applied path on slides, built from five-minute lessons with instant feedback, and the Prompt Lab (Pro) scores the prompts you write on clarity, specificity, constraints and context. It's practice for the outline-and-brief habit that makes every deck tool better.

## FAQ

**Is Gamma better than Canva for presentations?**

For a fast, complete first draft, usually yes: Gamma's agent plans and builds the whole deck from a prompt. Canva is better when the deck must match a brand closely, because its Brand Kit and full editor give you finer design control. Plenty of people draft in Gamma or ChatGPT and finish in Canva or PowerPoint.

**Can ChatGPT make PowerPoint slides?**

Yes. ChatGPT Slides, on Pro, Business and Enterprise plans, builds an editable deck and exports it to PowerPoint, PDF or Google Slides. On Plus, ChatGPT can create a presentation file you download, and its PowerPoint extension works inside PowerPoint. Check the exported file's formatting before you share it.

**Can you export Gamma to Google Slides?**

Yes, indirectly. Export the gamma as a PowerPoint file, then upload it to Google Slides. Expect font changes, because Google Slides ignores fonts embedded in an uploaded PowerPoint file and substitutes its own. Gamma's advice when formatting matters is to stay in PowerPoint or share a PDF.

**What is the best AI for making slides?**

It depends on the job. Gamma is fastest from prompt to finished draft, Canva is best for on-brand design, and ChatGPT suits decks built from your own notes and files. Whichever you use, outline the talk first: the one-sentence message, the audience, three points and the ask.

**Is Gamma free?**

Gamma has a free plan, but its AI credits don't refresh, a single prompt generates up to 10 slides, and exports carry a "Made with Gamma" badge. Paid plans add monthly credits and remove the badge. Gamma Business costs $40 per member per month, billed annually, at time of writing (October 2026).

**How do I get better at making presentations with AI?**

Outline before you generate. Write your one-sentence message, the audience, three supporting points with evidence and the ask, then paste that into the tool. Writing that brief is a learnable skill, and Iro AI's applied slides path trains it in five-minute lessons with instant feedback.
